The first Pythagorean Society may have been the Acousmatici, a part of the Pythagorean Community established in Magna Graeca about 550 B.C.E. Historical details are easily found in the many books on the Life of Pythagoras. It will be seen that his subject was much more than geometry. He was a teacher of spiritual ideas and a philosopher. He was also a scientist who sought to unite the many new and exciting discoveries being made in every field of inquiry, such as cosmology and biology, with a spiritual and intelligent aspect of humanity as being essentially a part of universal life. Aristotelian attitudes soon put paid to that and so the variety of subjects became separated into specific fields of study and no longer under the common title of Natural Philosophy and Europe fell into the Dark Age.
It is only in the last couple of decades or so that there is a genuine insight in the minds of researchers not to lose the original idea completely but to recognise that we live and have our being in a singular Cosmos and that every new discovery, however small or large, has its place in the vast Acana of Human Knowledge for the benefit of all.
We all want to know what is going on in this new resurgence and this is where the Pythagorean Society has a part to play. We want to present new ways of thinking about the past, present and the future, to explore common insights and spiritual attitudes whilst at the same time keeping the mind open to listen to unusual and original lines of thinking.
