The charity, which helps young people to start a career in hospitality and tourism, runs the FutureChef competition for trainee chefs aged 12-16 culminating in a National Final in London on 26 March 2012. There are three steps to the finals, the School Heats, the Area Finals, and the Regional Finals, the winners of the Regional Finals going on to the National Final at Westminster Kingsway College on 26th March.
Ex-Warrant Officer Adrian (Sharky) Ward, now Sodexo’s head chef at RNAS Culdrose, was asked to be a local judge at the Area Finals at Camborne College, where Lydia Uglow (15) from St Joseph’s School Launceston was the winner. Sharky agreed to mentor Lydia, helping her to develop her menu and he went to her school to assist at a training session.
It was subsequently arranged for Lydia visit RNAS Culdrose on the 31st January to cook her menu for the Commanding Officer, Captain Willy Entwisle, Commander Pat Douglas, Ann Owen, the Sodexo Site Manager and Anne Gibson, Lydia’s teacher from St Joseph’s School. The evening was very successful, her timings and execution were excellent and all thoroughly enjoyed her menu. She now is ready for the Regional finals on the 8th February at Tiverton Catering College.
